My own history with evangelical Christians began with a couple of college buddies in the 70’s who were some of the most open-minded and compassionate people I’ve ever met. They mixed freely and easily with people of other faiths (and non-faiths). And I met a lot of evangelicals afterwards who emphasized values of tolerance and community, outreach to the poor, even ‘environmentalism’ that seem 1,000 miles from what the term now seems to imply. Jimmy Carter was considered a very typical ‘evangelical’. And my understanding is that this was a part of the mainstream historical tradition of the movement.
I dunno what went happened… why the deep connection now with conservative politics… and the almost visceral animosity towards people who are ‘outside’. But this guy sounds a lot more like the people I knew back in the day. He sounds like I’m back in 197x. And again, it makes me wonder… what happened?
